In the quiet wine country of Wapato, WA, overlooking the Yakima Valley below, sits Freehand Cellars, a contemporary winery nestled between miles of orchards. Aside from Freehand’s artistic architecture, and artfully crafted wine and food menu, the property also reveals an airstream airbnb, just steps away.
The renovated airstream is separated from the winery by a row of fruit trees that naturally fence in the private hideaway. Guests are free to unwind while given convenient access to some of the top wine and food selections in the region. The airstream is rimmed with a custom-made deck and features a large, bubbling hot tub, complete with a side gas-fire pit to warm you up.
This resting place came to be when owner, Eduardo Oliveira, a traveler to Yakima Valley wineries for over 10 years, partnered with James DeSarno, who brought a strong architectural background to the various projects on site.
“We’re big fans of good design and Airstream trailers have been icons that represent that,” said Eduardo. “We then designed and built the deck and hot tub around it, creating a private and comfortable space to enjoy the views and the experience of being in the middle of farmland, surrounded by fruit orchards.”
From the deck, you can enjoy ever-spanning views of rolling hills lined with fruit trees, crowned with a direct view of Mt Adams peeking out from the West.
Enjoying a glass (or bottle) of wine in the hot tub at this camping spot doesn’t end with uncomfortably pulling on your pajamas and sleeping on a stiff sleeping pad with a wet head, as we often experience while spending the night off the beaten path. Instead, this contentment-on-wheels provides an intimate haven that is comfortable, with ample space to cook, relax, clean up, and settle in for the night. The interior of the airbnb displays the attention to detail that was put into it from the beginning- from the stylish eating nook, to the bathroom that includes a standing shower.
One of the most unparalleled aspects about this must-see location is that you are truly able to make it your own, like an artist in front of a blank canvas. If you want to pick up a charcuterie board for snacking while watching the sun melt into the skyline, or cook your own dinner on the stovetop of the modern kitchenette and snuggle in for a movie night in front of the Smart TV, you are allowed to do just that. It is here that you can come as you are, and cultivate your own definition of what just being means to you.
